Here’s how it forms: A dead tree is rapidly buried by mud, silt, volcanic ash—anything that keeps oxygen from getting to it, thereby preventing it from decomposing. Over a period of a few million years, minerals seep into the tree, replacing its wood fibers, and crystallizing. The result is a rock that retains the details, lines, swoops, and swirls of the original plant. Each decorative petrified wood piece on its stand is cut and polished, literally suspended in time—and uniquely beautiful.
